Margaret Ann Choate was born 13 Nov 1862 in Tunnel Hill, Johnson County, IL. Margaret died 23 May 1940 in Danville, Vermilion, IL, and was buried 25 May 1940 in Atherton Cemetery, Danville, Vermilion, IL. She married (1) Samuel VAUGHN 15 Aug 1888 in New Burnside, Johnson County, Illinois; they divorced. He was born 17 Oct 1824 in Henry County, Tennessee.

He was the son of David VAUGHN and Nancy MAY. Samuel died 18 Oct 1904 in Anna, Union. Illinois, and was buried 19 Oct 1904 in Woodside Cemetery, Burnside Twp., Johnson County, Illinois.

They had 4 children:

  • 1 William Alvin “Shoat” VAUGHN, born 22 May 1889, died 3 Oct 1974.
  • 2 James Carol VAUGHN, born 17 Sep 1891, died 29 Dec 1975.
  • 3 Benjamin Franklin VAUGHN, born 6 Dec 1893, died 4 Oct 1980.
  • 4 Lula Estelle (Louisa) VAUGHN, born 2 Mar 1895, died 3 Mar 1990.

NOTES for Margaret Ann Choate:

CENSUS: 1870 Johnson County, Illinois, lists Margaret age 7.

MARRIAGE: Johnson County, Illinois, book E-2, page 141, reg #0 134, Samuel Vaughn, age 64 (born 1824), and Margaret Choate, age 28. married 15 Aug 1888. It was Margaret’s first marriage. He had first married Esther McHenary, and secondly her aunt, Jane Choate. ln 1900 she divorced Samuel Vaughn. It appears Margaret left her 4 children to be reared by others. Margaret later married James H. Hobbs, see below.

See divorce decree, Margaret Vaughn vs. Samuel Vaughn, Johnson County, Illinois, Circuit Court, August term 1900. Mentions four (4) children by name; William A., James C., Benjamin F. and Louisa, ages respectively eleven, nine, six and three.

See papers regarding custodial care of Lula Vaughn by Silas Vaughn her half-brother and makes her a dependent child, and she is surrendered to custody of Illinois Children’s Home and Aid Society, Lula Vaughn, age 10 on or about 3 May 1906, and County Court of Johnson County, State of Illinois. April term 1907 takes this action dated 19 Apr 1907.

Margaret Ann Choate Vaughn secondly married 2) James H. Hobbs, born; 1837 and died, 1910 in Vermilion, County. Illinois.

Dr. Lawrence reported being in possession of a marriage certificate and the 1900 census of Johnson County, Illinois, lists James Hobbs as age 63, so he was likely born in 1837 and Margaret Hobbs is listed as widowed in 1910 in Danville City Directory, Danville, IL. In documenting the genealogy of Margaret Ann Choate Vaughn and her four (4) children by Samuel Vaughn, there is an interesting story, and just goes to show you how much of tracing ones ancestors and relatives may be associated with pure luck.

Mrs. Maurine Krohne was doing some research for me in the Cook Co. Courthouse in Chicago and the Choate name came up. She called me and wondered if this was the same Choate family to which Margaret Choate, belonged and I assured her that it was.

She then told me that she was in the process of preparing, at the request of a daughter (Mrs. Viva Morgan of Jupiter, Florida), as a birthday present to her mother, Lula Vaughn Spann, a family tree, and wondered if I could help her. Fortunately, I could.

It seems that Margaret and Samuel Vaughn were divorced in 1900 and that their four children were dispersed to be brought up by various people. Margaret Vaughn then married a James H. Hobbs, but did not take her children with her. Lula (Louisa) was in the custodial care of her half-brother, Silas Vaughn, (by Samuel Vaughn and Margaret’s Aunt, (2) Jane Choate Vaughn), and was finally in 1907, after Silas declared both of Louisa’s parents dead, transferred to the custodial care of the Illinois Children’s Home and Aid Society.

The commitment to that Society is documented and shows Silas as her previous custodian. Lula apparently remembered him as Uncle “Cyrus” and was not very fond of him. She apparently “blocks out” the first ten years or so of her life but there is documentation that she was cared for by various families; the Moores, the Boyers, the Eatons, Eubanks; John and Mary, etc. and apparently has good memories of some of her foster parents.

(See 1900 census of Johnson Co. IL family 167, dwelling 167, Hobbs. James, white, male, born March 1887, 63, widower, born TN, Margaret was his widow in 1910.)

It is interesting that Louisa lists on her marriage certificate to Archie Spann Bk 3, p 367, 21 Aug 1913, Il State Board of Health, County of Franklin, IL that her father was Samuel Vaughn and mother was Ellen Simpson (Her mother’s name as listed here is a bit of a puzzle and not adequately explained, but there is more than sufficient evidence, to say legally, at least, she is the daughter of Samuel Vaughn and Margaret Choate. Lula (Louisa) Vaughn is listed as age 19, living at Christopher, IL and states place of birth is Chicago, IL. Married in Sesser, IL. The reason for her stating her birthplace as Chicago cannot be determined. Also, no grounds can be found for her thinking she had at one time lived in an Evanston, Illinois home for children.

Some have said Hobbs worked for the Illinois Central RR and lived in Chicago, however this could not be confirmed.

LOUISA (Lulu, Lula) DETAILS:

First; her listing in 1900 Johnson Co., census as Louisa, age 3, born Mar 1897 living with mother; Margaret H. and grandmother, Louisa Choate, 68, widow (of Benjamin Choate).

Secondly, she appears in the divorce decree of Samuel Vaughn and Margaret Vaughn in August 1900, as age 3 (born 1897).

Thirdly, her half-brother (by Jane Choate), Silas Vaughn, transferring her custody to Illinois Children’s Home and Aid Society in 1907, age given as 10.

Fourth; Commitment paper to the Du Quoin IL Children’s Home which Lula remembers having lived there. The Index file per Illinois Children’s Home and Aid Society lists her as born in 1896, (this is certainly close enough to what is likely 1897 as her actual birth date.) and listed on the file is father, Samuel Vaughn, mother; Margaret Choate Vaughn, with Jane written in parenthesis below. It is interesting that Jane was Samuel’s first wife, aunt of Margaret and mother of Silas, he was the half-brother who placed her in the home.

CustodyPetition

State of Illinois, Johnson County, in the County Court of Johnson Co., April term, 1907, To the Honorable Thomas Sheridan, Judge of the County Court of Johnson Co., Your petitioner, Silas Vaughn, a responsible person and resident of said County for one year next preceding the time of presenting this petition, respectfully represents unto your Honor that Lula Vaughn, a girl of about the age of ten years, on or about May 3, 1906, now within the said County, is a dependent person in this: That she, the said child, has neither father or mother living and that she has been passed around from place to place and that her surviving relatives are unable to keep her and that her father died in Union Co., IL, about six years ago at the age of nearly 86 and that before his death her mother ran off with a man named James Hobbs and that she has since died. Your petitioner therefore humbly prays this Honorable Court to inquire into the alleged dependency of said girl and of the truth of the matters herein contained, in pursuance of the statute in such case made and provided, and make such order in the premises as to this Honorable Court may seem meet and proper in the premises, and as in duty bound your State of Illinois, Johnson County, ss. Silas Vaughn, being duly sworn, says that he has read the above petition by him signed, and knows the contents thereof; and that the same is true according to the best of his knowledge and belief. #312-668-1938. Found in “Index to Court Records” insc Lula Vaughn -a dependent custodian of Lula Vaughn; a dependent child, and now on this day, the same being one of judicial days of this term of court, comes Silas Vaughn, custodian of Lula Vaughn and files petition to have said child declared a dependent child wherein evidence is heard in open court and petition granted, and said child’s parents both being dead, said Lula Vaughn is declared dependent and surrender is made by Silas Vaughn her custodian to the Illinois Children’s Home and Aid Society endorsed and approved by the court and said dependent child Lula Vaughn is allowed to go to said Home as a dependent child.

Several of the people listed as her foster parents are the names that Lula (Louisa) remembers. Lula married on 20 Aug 1913, according to this information. Fifth; Petition to make her dependent Apr term 1907, Johnson Co., Court lists her as Lula Vaughn, per Johnson Co., Probate Journal K. Regarding Lula’s various dates of birth foster care authorities apparently told her 2 May 1895; 1900 census of Johnson Co., IL lists 3 May 1896. I believe perhaps that the census date would be most correct because she was living with her mother and I’m sure that 1hc half-brother, Silas Vaughn, might not actually know her correct birth date, and could easily have been off a day and a year.

It is too bad that Lula Spann did not get the benefit of her heritage before 4 Oct 1980, when her youngest brother Benjamin Franklin Vaughn died.

Vermilion Co., IL, death certificate Louise Craig, informant and beneficiary of estate. Some of the information given was not correct, such as place of birth, and parents’ names. Died of Cancer of the uterus.

Mrs. Viva Spann Morgan, daughter of Lula Vaughn Spann, adds the following information in a letter 13 Jul 1982, “The ‘Craig Girls’, noted that Margaret had talked about “Brother Logan,” and Brother Levi”, and this is the way she referred to them. Also mentioned “Sisters” and they were aware that a number of these brothers and sisters died quite young. Margaret was very good to the 5 Craig children, (2 boys and 3 girls); the 2 boys are dead. All three girls, live in Danville, IL, but the youngest is in very bad health). She was the only grandmother the Craig children ever knew, and they loved her. She had but few requirements, lived meagerly, gave to others, worked very hard, not very feminine, i.e., chopped wood, worked out of doors, always had a garden, wore straw hat, smoked a clay pipe, cautioned the Craig children that the best way to stop smoking was not to ever start. Loved to wash and iron. She ironed beautifully, and while furniture and such were not important to her, she was always clean and ironed.

On the day before she died, she made it known to the eldest Craig girl, “I’ve made my peace with the Lord. I am ready to go. She slipped away in her sleep.

DEATH: Vermilion County, Illinois, reg. 63, page 886, #260, died 23 May 1940 from Cancer of Uterus, in Danville, Illinois, age 77 years 6 months 14 days. Lists birthplace as Harrisburg, IL, born 17 Nov 1862. Widow. Buried 27 May 1940 Atherton Cemetery, Danville, IL. (Actually born Johnson County, for sure!)

Mrs. Viva Olene Spann Morgan, daughter of Louisa (Lulu), went personally to Johnson County court house and located the divorce papers of Margaret and Samuel Vaughn and the petition papers of her half-brother Silas Vaughn for custodial care of Luisa.

NOTES for Samuel:

Samuel Vaughn was married 3 times, first to Esther McHenary. Some say she had 2 children, if so they would have been reared by her family. She was 37 at time of this marriage, so far no record of the children has been located. Samuel married Jane Choate, 6 May 1864 and then Margaret Ann Choate, 15 Aug 1888. There is no record of the death (or divorce) of his first wife. Jane died in 1887, and he married Margaret in 1888. Margaret was Jane’s niece.

The application for widow’s pension indicates that Hobbs was born 22 Mar 1837 in Williamson County, Illinois, and he married Margaret Choate Vaughn, on 25 Oct 1907, in Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois, by Roland A. Russell, County Judge, and that her first husband died Oct 1897 in New Burnside. Apparently Margaret did not know the correct death date of her first husband. (First husband Samuel died 25 Dec 1904, in Anna, Illinois.)

Larry Vaughn editorial note: The following obituary doesn’t fit all the previous details, but is similar enough to cause one to assume these are one and the same persons. Here are some of the problems: the previous James Henry from our line would have been 81 years of age in 1994, not 86. He next married (2) Marjorie Pulenskee (?). The obituary states that he married Marjorie in 1966 in Kankakee, but he didn’t move there until 1968(?). Even though those details don’t match, the listing of brother and sisters are a match.

  1. Hello, I am a descendant from the Choates of Southern Illinois. My grandmother Nora Nellie Miller (nee: Vaughn) had 2 volumes of the family book that tragically were lost. I am trying to find out how one might obtain copies, do you happen to know?
“The Choates of Southern Illinois and related families” vols I & II By William R. Lawrence.
Much thanks for whatever help you can offer!
